Tensions have been raised following several incidents in recent weeks in the disputed waters around "the Rock" involving Gibraltarian police boats and Spanish fishermen and Guardia Civil boats.
In the most serious incident on May 23 a Gibraltar police boat collided with a Spanish Guardia Civil boat that had come to the fishermen's defence.
Spanish King Juan Carlos will visit the headquarters of the Guardia Civil in the port of Algeciras which is near Gibraltar, the royal palace announced Wednesday.
Spain ceded Gibraltar to Britain in 1713 under the Treaty of Utrecht but has long argued that it should be returned to Spanish sovereignty.
Britain refuses to renounce sovereignty against the wishes of Gibraltarians.
The last British royal visit to Gibraltar was by Edward's sister, Princess Anne, in 2009, which likewise annoyed Spain.
Spain also protested in 1954 when Queen Elizabeth made her first and only visit to Gibraltar.
