1 what is a SIM card?


Your SIM card allows your phone to communicate with a mobile network. Your mobile phone number is integrated on your SIM card.

1.1 what is my PIN number?


Your SIM card is covered by a 4-digit personal identification number (PIN). This original PIN has to be entered to activate your phone when you insert your SIM card on your phone. You will find your PIN on your starter pack.

Other info:

To keep your SIM card secure, you can leave the PIN identification request "on". This PIN can be changed occasionally as well.

You will also get a PUK code ( PIN Unblocking Key) at the time you receive your SIM card. (see question 12)

Please keep the original PIN and PUK codes in a secure place. You will need your original PIN for authentication purposes when you register to a service (my mobile account). You will need the PUK to unblock your SIM in case of accidental SIM lock.

1.2 what happens if I enter a wrong PIN number?


After 3 unsuccessful PIN code entries, your SIM card is automatically blocked for security reasons.

You can unblock it by using your 8-digit PUK( PIN Unblocking Key). Refer to your phone user guide on how to unlock your phone using your PUK.

It is important that you enter the PUK correctly. If a wrong PUK is entered 10 times, your Orange Prepay SIM card will be permanently blocked to protect your account. You will have to purchase a new Starter Pack with a new phone number if this happens.

If you have forgotten your PUK code please call us on 8900. We will authenticate you with your original PIN code before giving you your PUK code.

2 how do I activate my new mobile phone and my new SIM card?


  • Charge your mobile phone.
  • Insert your SIM card as instructed in your phone's user guide
  • Switch on your phone and enter your PIN number when requested. You can find your PIN on your starter pack.
  • Call 124.
  • Press 2 to obtain your mobile phone number.

4 recharging my Prepaid Account


4.1 where do I buy a Scratch card?


You will get prepaid scratch cards for recharging your account from our 20 Orange shops and more than 4,000 retailers through the island.

Recharge of your account can also be done at ATM of selected banks, by SMS, with E-Transfer and E-voucher (see question 4.3).

4.2 what are the available Scratch card denominations?

Orange scratch cards are available in 3 denominations:

  • Rs 50
  • Rs 100
  • Rs 300

4.3 how do I recharge my prepaid account?


4.3.1 Scratch Cards (option1)

  • Scratch off the security panel on your Orange scratch card to reveal the 14 digit number
  • Call 124
  • Choose Option 1 by pressing 1 to refill your account
  • Enter the 14 digits code of the scratch card
  • The voice prompt will tell you your new credit level
  • You will receive an SMS indicating your new credit level and validity of your account.(link to 4.5)

4.3.2 Scratch Cards (option2)

  • Dial *124*+ 14 digits code of the scratch card followed by #
  • A flash SMS is displayed on the mobile phone with the new balance and validity of the account
  • You will also receive an SMS indicating your new credit level and validity of your account.(link to 4.5)

4.3.3 ATM Recharge with selected banks (SBM, MCB, MPCB, Bank One)

  • Insert your debit or credit card in the slot of the machine
  • Input the PIN number of your debit or credit card
  • Choose your account
  • Choose transaction (Recharge)
  • Select the denomination
  • Input your mobile number
  • Confirm your mobile number
  • You will receive an SMS indicating your new credit level and validity of your account.

4.3.4 recharge by SMS (SBM, MCB)

You'll need to have your account with SBM or MCB and register for this service at your bank first.

Either

Send SMS "topup" on 8726 if the amount of recharge has already been decided at the time of application e.g Rs 100

Or to recharge with a different denomination

Send SMS "topup xxx" on 8726, where xxx is the denomination of the credit (Rs50, Rs 100 and Rs300)

Or to recharge another mobile phone

Send SMS "topup xxx ABCDEFG" on 8726, where xxx is the denomination of the credit (Rs50, Rs 100 and Rs300) and ABCDEFG is the mobile number.

SMS sent to banks to topup your phone are free.

4.3.5 recharge with E-transfer

Want to help a friend in need by transferring some of your credit to his mobile? Well, you can now with E-Transfer if you have a Prepay account. Just follow the few simple steps below. Make sure you do have credit available on your mobile before starting a transfer.You can transfer between Rs20 and Rs1,000 per month.

For example, if my number is 760 XXXX and I want to transfer Rs50 to my friend whose mobile no. is 750 XXXX


1. I send an SMS on 8500 to initiate the transfer in the form of

     T ‹ space › ‹ the number you wish to give credit to› ‹space› ‹Amount to be credited› ‹space› 0000

     which in my case is:

2. The system will check if I have enough credit and my eligibility

3. If sufficient credit is available, the transaction is done

4. My friend's account is credited with Rs50 and my account is debited with Rs50

5. We both receive an SMS notification that will confirm that all went well

4.3.6 recharge with E-voucher

You can also recharge your account by popping into any retailer on our E-voucher network (look for the E-voucher sign), ask for an E-voucher top-up and follow the steps below.

  • Choose your E-voucher amount between Rs 20 and Rs 1,000.
  • The retailer will take your payment and do the transaction
  • You will get an SMS notification on your phone to confirm the transaction

4.4 how to check my validity period and available credit?


4.4.1 option 1

  • Call 126.
  • The voice prompt will tell you your new credit level and the validity period of your account.
  • Tariff : First 7 queries free of charge (per day) ; then 60cts per query

4.4.2 option 2

  • Dial 122.
  • You will receive an SMS immediately, indicating your credit level and validity of your account.
  • Tariff : First 7 queries free of charge (per day) ; then 60cts per query

4.4.3 option 3

  • Dial *122#
  • You will receive a flash message that will have your available credit and validity of your account.
  • Tariff : Free of charge

4.5 I have recharged my account? For how long can I use my credit?


Your credit is valid for a limited period after your recharge.

Option 1: If your account has been recharged with a Scratch Card

The card denomination you are using to recharge your account determines for how long your credit will be valid.

  • Scratch card of Rs 50 : credit valid for 50 days after recharge
  • Scratch card of Rs 100 : credit valid for 100 days after recharge
  • Scratch card of Rs 300 : credit valid for 150 days after recharge

Option 2: If your account has been recharged with E-Transfer

  • When your credit is zero or your credit validity period has lapsed, you are in an "inactive" state for a period of 60 days. If your account is recharged when you are in an "inactive" state, then your validity period for your new credit is 30 days.
  • If your account is recharged when your current validity period is less than 30 days, then your validity period for your new plus existing credit is 30 days.
  • If your account is recharged when your current validity period is more than 30 days, then your validity period for your new plus existing credit does not change.

4.6 I no longer have any credit on my account. What happens if I do not recharge my account?


When your credit reaches Rs 25, we notify you by SMS.

When your credit falls to Rs 10, you are notified by a voice message every time you make a call.

Once your credit falls to zero, you will be in an "inactive" state; however, you will still receive calls.

If you do not recharge your account within 60 days after your credit is zero, your account is deactivated. At deactivation you will no longer be able to recharge your account or receive calls.

4.7 what happens when my validity period for my credit has lapsed?


Three days before your validity period lapses, we alert you by SMS.

During those three days we also notify you of this state by a voice message each time you make a call.

Your credit expires when its validity period has lapsed. That means you will no longer be able to use the remaining credit on your account. You will be in an "inactive" state and you will still receive calls.

If you do not recharge your account within 60 days after your validity period has lapsed, your account will be deactivated. At deactivation you will no longer be able to recharge or receive calls.

4.8 can I use my mobile phone if I have no credit on my account?


If you have no credit on your account, you will not be able to make calls. However you can still receive calls on your mobile for a period of 60 days (see question 4.7).

4.9 can I get back my phone number upon reactivation if it has been deactivated?


When your mobile number is deactivated, the number may be reallocated to another customer. In this case, you will not be able to recover your previous number.

5 Orange Mobile Internet



5.1 What is Mobile Internet?


Mobile internet is surfing the internet on your EDGE/3G mobile phone. For more details, click here

5.2 What are social networking sites?


Those are sites like Facebook/Twitter/mySpace where you can connect and share short messages/photos/emails with your friends/family and even strangers all around the world

5.3 I don't want to buy a package. Can I still access the internet?


Yes you can but it will cost you more - Rs3.53/MB.This is what we call PAYG. If you buy a 20MB package at Rs50, 1MB will cost you only Rs2.50/MB

5.4 What is a WAP site?


A WAP site is an internet site specially designed for mobile phones. It's much lighter than a normal website and does not contain as many pictures and text. Some websites have got their WAP equivalents like www.facebook.com, www.msn.com, www.bbc.co.uk, www.twitter.com, www.livescore.com, etc

5.5 Why do I always access Orange World when I go online?


This is the default website when accessing the internet on a mobile phone

(APN = "Orange World") and is the official WAP Orange website. On this site you will find latest news, downloads and links to most visited mobile websites

6 SMS & MMS


6.1 what is SMS?


SMS stands for Short Messaging Service. It is text messaging service that allows you to send and receive short text messages from your mobile.

6.2 how to send an SMS?



  • Select Menu and choose Messaging.
  • Choose Create message and select Text message.
  • Enter your recipients phone number in the To: field or select Add to select the phone number from phone directory
  • Enter your message.
  • To send the message, select Send

You can send and receive up to 160 characters in a message.

6.3 how much does it cost to send an SMS?


From an Orange Prepay mobile, it costs you Rs 0.60 per SMS From an Orange Post Pay mobile, it costs you Rs 0.50 excl VAT per SMS.

6.4 what is MMS?


MMS stands for Multimedia Messaging Service. It allows a variety of message elements to be sent to you as a user and these can contain text, animations, photographs, etc.
From an Orange Prepay mobile, it costs you Rs 3.00 per SMS

From an Orange Post Pay mobile, it costs you Rs 3.00 excl VAT per SMS

6.5 how different is MMS as compared to existing SMS service?


With MMS, you can combine pictures, audio clips and text in a single message. For example, you can send a personalized birthday greeting with a picture, a song and text. You can even choose to send your MMS to a mobile phone or an email address.

6.6 can I send longer messages with MMS?


Yes, with MMS, you can also send a message with more characters than with standard SMS.

6.7 can I send MMS?


Both prepaid and postpaid customers can send and receive MMS. You need either a WAP compatible phone or an account on our Orange web portal.

6.7.1 MMS compatible phone

  • Check that your phone is MMS enabled before proceeding.
  • To enable MMS, send "MMS" by SMS on short code 8200.
  • You will receive the configuration settings by SMS.
  • Save your multimedia settings.
  • Your mobile phone is now ready to send or receive MMS.


6.7.2 MMS from Orange web portal
With Orange web portal you can manage your photo album online.

Register online on www.orange.mu.

You will receive a login ID, which is the same as your mobile number, and a password via SMS upon registration.

6.8 how to configure MMS on GPRS/MMS phones and WAP Phones?


Configurations exist for both GPRS/MMS Phones and WAP Phones without GPRS or MMS features.
Call us at 8900 for assistance to your configure your phones or for more information.

MMS over GPRS

For all MMS configurations, even if this is not mentioned in the phone, please remember to set:

  • Username as MSISDN, i.e. your mobile number
  • Password as 'mmsc'

6.9 how to send an MMS via a phone?



  • Take a picture.
  • Use your phone to personalise the picture by adding text, a sound clip or your own voice.
  • Click on Send from your 'text' menu.

You can send the MMS either on your correspondent mobile number or to his email address

6.10 is there a limit on the size of the MMS that I can send via my phone?


The limit is 200 Kb per MMS. However the size limit will also depend on the model of your mobile phone.

7 Orange World and Downloads



7.1 what is Orange World?


Orange World is our WAP portal, www.orangeworld.mu. You access a whole range of information and entertainment. You can download games, ring tones, music as well as get information on weather, sports, news

7.2 what do I need to enjoy the Orange contents?


You need a WAP enabled phone for download from Orange World or access to www.ornage.mu.

7.3 how do I configure my phone to access WAP?



  • Send an SMS on 8224 : wap[space] «phone brand and model»
    e.g for a Nokia N70, send : wap nokian70.
  • You will first get a confirmation SMS.
  • You will then get the configuration settings sent by SMS
  • Save as «PortailWAPDefaut» by keying in <1111>.
  • You will receive an SMS to confirm that you mobile phone is now WAP-enabled.

7.4 how to download content?


7.4.1 By SMS

  • If you are a Prepay customer, make sure that you have enough credit on your phone.
  • From a listed directory of content (www.orange.mu or in the newspapers), spot the content you would like to download (animations, wallpapers, videos etc).
  • To download a content, send the 1st letter of the content type, followed by the 5 digits code for that specific content, for e.g. to download a wallpaper, type W11001 in an SMS and send on 8222
  • Click on the content name to download <1111>.
  • The price of the selected content will then be displayed
  • Scroll down the page and click on 'yes' to proceed with the download

7.4.2 On Orange World

  • Open your browser on your mobile and you will be automatically redirected towards the site www.orangeworld.mu.
  • Choose the content you would like to download and select 'download'.
  • You need to confirm the transaction in the price screen when you are prompted.
  • The selected content will be downloaded on your mobile.
  • Choose the folder you want the content to be saved to on your phone.

8 Voice Mail



8.1 can I use Voice Mail?


Yes, Voice Mail is available to all our customers, both postpaid and prepaid customers. Voice Mail is pre-activated for Post Pay and Prepay customers. You therefore do not need to ask us for activation. If your Voice Mailbox is not active for a period of 28 days, you will lose the settings you

8.2 how to activate the voice mail on my phone?



  • From your phone, select "menu" then click on "call divert".
  • Select "Voice calls".
  • Choose one of the following options for diversion in case of:
  • All voice calls
  • If busy
  • If not answered
  • If out of reach
  • If not available
  • Choose "activate" and input the Voicemail No. "125 + MSISDN" where MSISDN is your mobile number.


8.3 how do I know that there is a message deposited in my mailbox?


You receive an SMS to alert you that you've got Voice Mail.

Dial 123 to retrieve your message when you are dialling from your own mobile.

Dial 250 5000 if you are checking for your voice messages from another phone (fixed or mobile).

You can change your settings so that your Voice Mail account is protected by a password. This is more secure when you retrieve your messages indirectly, that is when you are dialing in from any phone.

The settings will be lost if your Voice Mail account is inactive for a period of 28 days.

Retrieval of voice mail is free excluding when on Roaming mode.

8.4 how to deactivate the voice mail?


  • From your phone, select "menu" then "call divert"
  • Select "Voice calls"
  • Choose one of the following options for call divert cancellation:
  • All voice calls
  • If busy
  • If not answered
  • If out of reach
  • If not available
  • Choose "cancel"

9 International Roaming



9.1 how do I activate international roaming?


9.1.1 I have an Orange Post Pay account

  • Visit any of our Orange shops with your ID card
  • Fill in the application form
  • International roaming is activated on the date requested.
  • No deposit required

9.1.2 I have an Orange Prepay account
You only have to ensure that you have sufficient credit on your account before you travel.Roaming is activated by default on Orange Prepay.

9.2 how do I use roaming when abroad?


9.2.1 I have an Orange Post Pay account

  • I am a postpaid roamer in England calling B (7581234) in Mauritius :

9.4 Do I pay the same roaming tariff from different countries?

12 what is Conference Calling?



This service allows you to communicate with more than two persons at the same time from your mobile. A maximum of 6 persons are allowed to communicate with one another at the same time.

Before making any conference calls, you need to register for the service by calling on 8900. The registration is free of charge.

  • Make your first call.
  • Wait for your correspondent to reply.
  • From your phone options, choose add call
  • Dial the other number and wait for the answer
  • Choose option conference, now you are in conference with both parties.

This code is confidential and due to security reasons, we'll need an official letter from you to provide it. Please contact your Account representative if you are a business customer. Otherwise, go to an Orange shop with your ID card to get it.

There are no subscription fees for accessing the Orange Menu. The dynamic menu is updated free of charge on your SIM. However, charges apply only when services on the menu are used.

Standard SMS rates will apply for services accessed using SMS and, in the same way, standard Mobile Internet rates apply when accessing websites.

14.28 Why is my Orange Menu different from my friend's Orange Menu?


Menus in the Orange Menu depend on the type of mobile phone used. E.g. a BlackBerry phone will contain a submenu for specifying BlackBerry bundles

14.29 What's Rush SMS?


Rush SMS allows you to politely inform the calling party that you cannot pick up the call by sending a pre-configured SMS.

14.30 How does Rush SMS work?


When you hang up, a selection menu of 4 ready to be sent SMS appears. Click on any SMS to inform the calling party of your unavailability.

14.31 What's the cost of Rush SMS?


Standard SMS charges apply for each SMS sent via the selection menu - Rs 0.60 per SMS for prepay & Rs 0.50 per SMS for Post Pay

14.32 Why does a 'Send an SMS' window appear each time I reject a call?


This is because Rush SMS has been activated on your SIM card. Select the 'exit' option to return to your main window. Rush SMS is by default activated on new SIM cards.

14.33 How to deactivate Rush SMS on my SIM card?


On the Orange Menu, select 'Rush SMS', followed by 'Deactivate'.

14.34 How to edit the 4 pre-configured Rush SMS?


On the Orange Menu, select 'Rush SMS', followed by 'Manage SMS'. Click on 'Edit SMS' to change the pre-configured messages.

Corrective actions to be taken on some mobile phones for the Rush SMS service:

iPhone 2G: If when you hang up, the selection menu does not appear properly, this might be due to external applications installed on the iPhone 2G phone.

Nokia N80: Upon selection of a pre-configured SMS, a confirmation message appears before the SMS may be sent. This can be fixed by disabling a security setting in the phone menu.

SAMSUNG WM (6.1) SGH-i900: Exit the Rush SMS menu correctly through the windows mobile menu, else, the service will fail next time it is used.
